Getting back to attending school and playing sports in high school or younger is a local thing, not a national thing.

States, and in some cases regions and leagues, are making decisions about how they come out of a COVID-19 lockdown or shutdown, because each region is struggling with the pandemic differently. Factors such as population density, state and local government policies, and the behavior of the populace all factor in.

So whether we'll see high school sports of any kind in the fall or even maybe HS 7s rugby depends on each regions history and current threat assessment.

We've been asking around, checking the data, and digging, and here's what we can tell you about various states:

California: No Fall Rugby Expected. HS football has been pushed later and the SCIRF league, which normally started play in December, will instead begin in March.

Colorado: No Fall Rugby Expected. The Colorado HS Athletic Association is pushing most sports to the winter or spring. The Girls HS 7s league that usually plays in the fall most likely won't.

Connecticut: No Fall Rugby Expected.

Florida. No Fall Rugby. They don't do fall HS 7s in Florida.

Idaho: Still On Track. There's actually a pretty good chance rugby teams will play 7s this fall. Idaho has not been hit hard by the pandemic and football teams are starting practices next week. However, everything is predicated on things not getting worse, and organizations following certain protocols.

Indiana: Maybe. After looking like the state wouldn't have much in the way of fall HS sports, Indiana now appears close to reaching Stage 5 of return-to-play, which is as good as you're going to get at this stage. Rugby is not an Indiana HS Athletic Association sport, but Rugby Indiana will not fight the IHSAA in the interests of harmony. We think there will be something in the way of 7s tournaments at some point in the fall in Indiana.

Maryland: No Fall Rugby Expected. Almost everything is shut down at the moment in Maryland.

Massachusetts. No Fall Rugby. Massachusetts doesn't really have a lot of fall HS 7s anyway, and this fall certainly not.

Minnesota. Unlikely. The Minnesota State High School League moved football to spring but kept soccer in the fall. Rugby might sneak in a tournament or two late in the fall, but the rugby presence won't be huge.

Montana. No Fall Rugby. Montana sports are starting as normal, but Rugby Montana is strictly a 15s in the spring activity.

New Jersey. No Fall Rugby Expected. Hit hard by COVID early on, New Jersey is still not out of the woods.

New Mexico. No Fall Rugby. Fall sports in New Mexico are restricted anyway.

New York. No Fall Rugby Expected. There might be some touch rugby late in the fall. Tackle is very unlikely.

North Carolina. Maybe Later In The Fall. Sports are taking a wait-and-see approach. If things look good for other sports, we might see some rugby action in late October or in November.

Ohio. Probably No Fall Rugby Expected. There's perhaps a sliver of hope, but it's highly unlikely we'll see fall 7s in Ohio.

Oregon. No Fall Rugby. Already Rugby Oregon has announced it will not have fall 7s.

Pennsylvania. A solid 50-50 chance. Despite all the brouhahah about a tournament that isn't being held this coming weekend, Pennsylvania is quite close to opening up the state for competition. If that happens, Rugby Pennsylvania will take a look at it and possibly give the OK later in the fall. It's worth noting that Pennsylvania COVID cases are trending down, and that the worst-hit places are all in and around Philadelphia. The rural areas of Pennsylvania have been far less hard hit.

Tennessee. League Starting September! Tennessee has a robust fall 7s league and is planning to start September 1, with a championship in November.

Texas. No Fall Rugby. Rugby Texas doesn't do the fall 7s thing anyway, so will happily stand down and wait for spring.

Utah. All (most?) systems go. Maybe? The big issue with fall 7s in Utah is that the best venue for tournaments, the RAC in Salt Lake City, is in the one county (Salt Lake County) that is having the hardest time climbing out of the COVID mess. But expect to see some rugby South of SLC and nearer Provo. They already had a summer 7s league with modified rules.

Utah HSers Get Some 7s In

Virginia. No Fall Rugby Expected. Football got bumped to spring, and all other sports and activities were delayed until December. So, no, rugby won't be getting a fall pass.

Washington. No Fall Rugby Expected.

Wisconsin. No Fall Rugby Expected.
