Western Washington Opens 2019 On Winning Note
The Western Washington Vikings won two games of the weekend, beating the University of Victoria U21s 39-14 while also taking care of the University of Washington 53-31 in the B-side game.
This was the first outing for WWU since the victory over Oregon State on November 17 and the rust was evident.
Despite a penalty count of 27-4 against the home side, as well as three yellow cards, and loving five turnovers near the UVic goalline, the Vikings controlled the game.
WWU jumped out to a 10-0 lead on two unconverted tries and never looked back. Aiden Carlisle led the way, scoring three of the nine on the day, while Gerardo Cisneros added two more, and JoJo Alkhedairy, Chase Bates, Tristan Mohn, Bryce Durnil-Durrance, and Connor Browne all touched down once.
The depth of the squad showed as five players made their way from the B squad into the A side.
WWU now 5-0 in league play and 7-0 overall with victories over Bayside RFC(BC) and UVIC.
The WWU B side also managed a win over the game but inexperienced Washington Huskies 53-21. Charlie Ronan had a very strong day leading the Bs to the win, showing leadership while scoring two tries. He was named Man of the Match by the opposition.
WWU will travel to Eugene to take on the Ducks of Oregon. WWU sits on top of the NCRC with 20 points on five wins and UO 20 points with a 4-1 record.
