UMass Puts ECRC on Notice
The University of Massachusetts Amherst is off to a 2-0 start in the ECRC, and things look pretty good as they chase BC, AIC, and Middebury for the conference title.
The Minutemen disposed of Northeast 65-7 on Saturday after beating UConn in their conference opener.
Head Coach Phil Ciccarelli said the team is working together well early.
"It was another good outing for us," said the coach. "We're good in our set piece and everything seems to be working. The guys started working August 24 and that extra work early on paid off."
Despite having club president Brendan Kelly out injured, UMass has been able to put together some polished performances.
"It's been a lot of fun to work with these guys," said Ciccarelli. "We've returned some good players and been able to add some really good athletes and rugby players from BC High, Belmont, and Milton High School. Thats give us some depth."
Co-captain Thomas Thekaekara said his squad recognizes that the harder games are coming up. But, he thinks that will work in the Minutemen's favor.
"We have a lot of time to perfect things before we finish off with AIC and BC," said Thekaekara, who added that the team is finally getting comfortable with the game plan, and seeing the benefits of following it. They know they can score, and, added the captain, "now we’re comfortable with how we play."
