UCLA Just Past Utah
UCLA Just Past Utah
UCLA edged Utah 36-34 Saturday to move into 1st in the PAC Rugby Conference - temporarily - and at least ensuring they finish 2nd.
The Bruins are now 4-1 and have completed their conference games. Cal sits 3-0 and 3rd, but this week's game v Oregon State was canceled and no reschedule date has been set, and that could likely be a forfeit. Cal also is yet to play Utah, but the Bears are favored in that game, also.
For Utah, it was a disappointing result coming as it did two days after a 57-50 loss to St. Mary's. Head Coach Jon Law noted that a chunk of his team had just come off a long three days of competition at the Las Vegas Invitational, where they won, but in retrospect it was too much.
"We've now had several ofour top players playing rugby on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Thursday, and Saturday," said Law. "Five days of rugby is too much. I don't care how fit or tough a guy is, there is a hidden cost to the body to play that much and today we were empty."
Law pointed to the lopsided score between BYU and St. Mary's as evidence of how even a small level of fatigue can hurt a team.
"We are not a deep enough program yet," said Law, who laid the blame for the tough schedule squarely at the feet of the Utah coaches.
Utah was missing four starting backs, but those players will be returning from injury soon and the postseason and 7s season could be a good one for the Utes.
As for UCLA, Head Coach Scott Stewart said his team's set piece looked good and the backline was able to stretch the Utah defense when it needed to.
"The main thing for us was staying in there when we were down and getting ourselves back in the game," he said.
