Tempe Downs Tucson
Tempe improved to 6-2 after a 37-12 victory over Tucson in Arizona.
This was Tempe's first game since mid-March, when they beat Brophy Prep 57-12.
Working methodically through the phases Tempe was able to build a nice three-try lead.
But penalties and mistakes started to creep into their game and Tucson was able to punish those to score trice to get back into the game.
Tempe's defense was good, however, and as the second half progressed they were able to hold Tucson at arm's length. Late tries extended the lead to 25.
Leading the way for Tempe were Tali Maafu, Pete Lui, and Lucas Scheirmeyer.
Up ahead now is one more game, against Scottsdale, before the state championships. So far, Tempe has lost only twice, once to in-state rivals Red Mountain, and once to top Washington state team Eastside Lions.
