Startling Turnaround For Colorado Mesa
The startling turnaround of Colorado Mesa continues, as the Mavericks claimed another big victory over the weekend.
Barely a month after giving up over 100 points to Northern Colorado, Mesa has figured out its attacking and defensive pattern, and with some players back from injury are a real force in the Rocky Mountain Conference in Men’s DII College.
Saturday, Mesa (ranked #39 by Goff Rugby Report) exploded for 52 points to down #22 Montana State 52-41. Since that 110-0 loss to Northern Colorado, Mesa has gone 3-1, with the lone loss a 17-15 loss September 21 to Weber State.
The Mavericks have beaten Western Colorado, won a forfeit over CSU Pueblo, and beaten Montana State.
And that 52-41 win wasn’t really so close, as Mesa led 52-26 with ten minutes to go. Head Coach Mackenzie Lewis said earlier this season that after much hard work things had finally just come together. It seems to have taken. With the team a bit more healthy and and influx of new blood Mesa has completely turned around its season.
No. 8 Enzo Santos opened the scored and also scored the first try of the second half, getting his side on the front foot early. Center Carson Tolley and lock George Puamau also touched down twice, while scrumhalf Javier Urquijo kept the attack moving and added six conversions, getting Mesa full value for their tries.
Montana State and Northern Colorado still ended up ahead of Mesa in the standings, but it’s still somewhat shocking to see a team that was struggling the way Mesa was turn it around to finish a close 3rd.
