St. Mary's Beats Arizona State
St. Mary's finished off their two-game trip to Arizona with a convincing 80-12 defeatx of Arizona State Sunday.
The Gaels were led by Arizona HS product Dylan Audsley, who scored 30 points on the day, but with nine players scoring 12 tries, they also spread the glorty a little.
"It was a great weekend to further develop the team," said St. Mary's Head Coach Tim O'Brien. "It strengthened our program."
St. Mary's also won the B-side game comfortably. It was a bit of a blowout, 45-0 at halftime and Arizona State didn't score until late, but O'Brien said early-season games can get away from you quickly. ASU, he added, never quit and stared positive, trying to correct their issues, and "that reflects well on the coaches."
One of those coaches, Head Coach Gary Lane, said his squad looked OK for about 20 minutes early, but kept falling off tackles and that hurt them.Still they kept coming, and with scrumhalves Nate Short and later Brian Reilly working hard the Sun Devils were able to score twice, and got over the line another time, but didn't get the call.
"I think overall the team learned a lot and put in a lot of effort," said Lane. "We played a lot better in the second half, but St. Mary's is a team with a lot of skill and power."
