St. Ignatius made it three wins in three in their Texas tour, defeating defending state champs Westlake 22-14 Wednesday night.
The game was close all the way through, and while it wasn't flashy, both teams had their moments. Westlake pressured early and were camped out in the St. Ignatius end for several minutes. The St. Ignatius defense held for a while, but Westlake spun it wide and scored in the corner. The conversion was good from the sideline and Westlake 7-0.
Westlake came right back to pressure St. Ignatius again, but couldn't bust through. When Ignatius did get a chance, they worked their way down to the Westlake line, tried to go straight over with the forwards, and then found a seam in midfield to tie it up 7-7.
In the second half, St. Ignatius spent much of the period inside the Westlake 22. Ignatius scored with a massive overlap - four extra players waiting for a pass that wouldn't come because the Ohio team was scoring anyway. Then Ignatius went right back, and powered through to the Westlake line once more. This time, a series of phases were stymied by Westlake, and then after a penalty play they worked more phases and scored to make it 19-7.
Westlake replied with a nice break up the middle and good enough support to finish it off. But St. Ignatius sealed the game with a penalty kick 22-14.
Westlake tried to use their backs, but St. Ignatius did a superb job keeping possession, and their forwards were just too much.
