Seeding the Pacific Invitational - Updated & Corrected

This article has been significantly changed due to the fast the tournament is already seeded and there's been a change of teams (which they didn't tell us about).

In a follow-up to Thursday’s article about seeding the Boys HS NIT single-school bracket, here’s a quick look at the Pacific Invitational to be held a week before in San Diego.

Eight teams are slated to participate, all eight are ranked by Goff Rugby Report. They are:

Back Bay (HS Club 7)

Danville (HS Club 1)

Fallbrook (Single-School 4)

Kahuku (Single-School 9)

Peninsula Green (Multi-School 18)

Red Mountain (Multi-School 4)

San Diego Mustangs (Multi-School 47 until a week ago)

Santa Monica (Multi-School 17)

The Mustangs dropped off last week but have been ranked all season until now.

The Little Q in San Diego will host the three-day event, and it seems fairly straightforward how they should be seeded:

So if we went by GRR's rankings, we'd get something like this:

1. Danville

2. Fallbrook

3. Red Mountain

4. Back Bay

5. Kahuku

6. Santa Monica

7. Peninsula Green

8. San Diego Mustangs

The only real debate is why Fallbrook over Red Mountain, as both are the #4 team in their respective rankings. We pick Fallbrook because of the high-level single-school v club games this year, the single-school teams have been victorious more often, and indeed Fallbrook has been successful in single-school and club competitions.

Kahuku and Santa Monica could well be considered fairly close, so it seems appropriate that they are #4 and #5 and get to figure it out on the field. Peninsula Green will be a very tough opponent for Red Mountain.

There is little expectation of change for these rankings. Red Mountain’s regular season is done. They won’t move much. Fallbrook could play their way up a little bit more, but not to #1. Danville could be unseated as #1, but it’s doubtful the Oaks would move down too far.

Regardless, the seeds are already decided and they in fact jibe exactly with that list. The quarterfinal matchups are:

Danville v San Diego Mustangs

Kahuku v Back Bay

Red Mountain v Santa Monica

Peninsula Green v Fallbrook
