Rugby Wa Semis Set
Rugby Wa Semis Set
The Rugby Washington playoff matchups are set after the final weekend of play.
There was no suspense as to which team would be first, as the Liberty Patriots had already clinched the top spot. The only blemish on their record is a 17-14 loss to Budd Bay. Aside from that match and a close win over the same Barbarians team, Liberty was a point-scoring machine, averaging just under 40 per game for the season, and finishing 9-1 after beating Chuckanut 65-25.
Kent, meanwhile, defeated Eastside 31-28 to secure 2nd place, With four wins, however, Eastside had done enough to clinch 4th. That's because Budd Bay defeated Seattle 38-27 to improve to 5-5 and take 3rd.
It has been an interesting season in Washington with several very close games, and we at Goff Rugby Report wondered if things would have been different if Rugby Washington used the bonus points system (a bonus for four tries in a game, and a bonus for a loss of seven or less).
Here's how the standings ended up.
Rugby Washington | W | L | T | PF | PA | PD | Pts |
Liberty | 9 | 1 | 0 | 398 | 145 | 253 | 36 |
Kent | 6 | 4 | 0 | 257 | 244 | 13 | 24 |
Budd Bay | 5 | 5 | 0 | 243 | 202 | 41 | 20 |
Eastside | 4 | 6 | 0 | 186 | 230 | -44 | 16 |
Seattle | 3 | 7 | 0 | 206 | 272 | -66 | 12 |
Chuckanut | 3 | 7 | 0 | 120 | 317 | -197 | 12 |
And if we used bonus points, the standings would not have changed, other than Seattle would not have been in a points tie with Chuckanut:
1. Liberty 45 pts
2. Kent 33
3. Budd Bay 28
4. Eastside 21
5. Seattle 18
6. Chuckanut 16
The semis are set for May 9, with Liberty facing Eastside, and Kent taking on Budd Bay. Liberty won both meetings with Eastside during the regular season, 32-17 ad 34-0. The games between Budd Bay and Kent were very close, with Budd Bay winning at Kent 17-12, and Kent winning at Budd Bay 41-35 (in a game where Budd Bay scored seven tries and converted none).
