Rugby Ohio Latest: Changes at the Top

Rugby Ohio has a new President, and adjustments in dues and the Board structure.

Just about a week after GRR published an interview with Rugby Ohio Board President Chris Northup, the organization has a new president.

Northup said in this article on February 12—Rugby Ohio Had a Board Meeting, But Did Anything Happen?—that he would step down if he saw that things were going to be OK (we're paraphrasing), and added that such a move could happen as early as March. Well, it happened this week.

Northup stepped down and Mark Weidner, the head of the change-agent group that wanted to to open up the Board elections and cut dues, is in as Board President.

The first order of business after that was to address comments form girls teams in the state that felt they had been squeezed out of the election process. Weidner agreed, and the Board voted to change the By-Laws to change the Board representation.

The recently-election positions were:

North At-Large
South At-Large
Central At-Large
High School At-Large
Middle School At Large
Youth At-Large

Three other positions will remain until August.

But the Board makeup was changed by merging Middle School and Youth, and splitting High School to High School Boys and High School Girls. As a result of this, Youth At Large Boardmember Bart Hacker resigned. The Board at the same time agreed that no region should have more than four seats on the Board, that meant that a HS Girls representative would come from the Central or South regions, since North already has four. Jeff Marshall, who represents Walnut Hills Girls in the Cincinnati area, was then drafted in to serve in the HS Girls spot.

Hacker was then re-appointed as a general At-Large Boardmember. Doing it this way allowed for the roles to be shifted a bit but kept a Boardmember who had been duly elected.

Rugby Ohio Board is now:
Mark Weidner (South At-Large) President
Bart Hacker At-Large*
Kevin Friis At-Large*
Craig Russell At-Large*
Pete Kahler (North At-Large)
Kyle Clark (Central At-Large)
Rory Fitzpatrick (HS Boys At-Large)
Jeff Marshall (HS Girls At-Large)
Chris DePerro (Youth & Middle School At Large)

The next order of business was due. The Board voted to reduce Spring, 2025 dues by $40 per member. That dues level is expected to be reflected in Rugby Xplorer's registration portal within a day or two.

Weidner told GRR that the hope is to further reduce dues for 2025-26 once they go through the financial information in detail.

Weidner continued: "what I want to do is thank the Board for the all the hard work they have done all through the years. We had a difference of opinion, but having a difference of opinion doesn't make you a bad person."

There is no word yet on whether there will be a chance in the Executive Director position, or, indeed, the position's job description.
