Pro Rugby Team for Ohio
Pro Rugby Team for Ohio
Pro Rugby USA has announced that a team will be placed in Ohio for the inaugural season, slated, still, to begin in April.
Sacramento, San Francisco, and San Diego have all been announced officially, with Denver expected to be one more city. The original list of six teams is reportedly now down to five, with each team playing four home games and four away games.
The Ohio team will play in the Village of Obetz, a few miles south of the state capital of Columbus. While Obetz itself is small - a population of less than 5,000, Columbus has a population of well over 800,000 and is one of the largest US markets without a pro football team (San Antonio and Austin, Texas are larger). Franklin County, Ohio, has a population of over 1.2 million according to the US Census Bureau.
In an announcement released today, Pro Rugby said "We thank the City of Obetz for their help in making a team in Ohio possible. We are excited about building the stadium experience and hopefully this model will allow for expansion in other areas of the country that do not have existing venues that fit the rugby match criteria."
Memorial Park in Obetz hosts the football, soccer, and baseball facilities for the local schools, and is also the home of the Columbus Crew MSL team's indoor/outdoor practice facility.
