Oregon Shocks Western Washington in NCRC
University of Oregon pulled off a bit of a shocker this past weekend, beating #5-ranked Western Washington 17-15.
This was not expected, as WWU has been on top of the NCRC for quite a while and just beat a strong Boise State side 55-0.
But Oregon has seen some talented and experienced high school players join the school and, more importantly, they didn't play the game on paper.
"The team played our style of physical defensive rugby," said Oregon Rugby club president Brooks Fisher. "So proud of the team for pulling it off, especially with it being our first match of the season against a very quality team in WWU."
This was a tough game throughout. Penalties were called throughout, with 38 penalties and six yellow cards issued (three for each team).
Western Washington took an early lead but Oregon scored twice to lead 10-7 at halftime. WWU tied it up with a penalty, but a second-half converted try put the Ducks ahead 17-10.
The Vikings needed to score to tie it and in the end were able to get over just at the end of the game. The conversion attempt was short, and Oregon had their win.
"We really had to stay in the grind of the game to hold the lead until the very end," said Fisher.
Ethan Sherman was outstanding for the Ducks, earning player of the game honors.
WWU will have to be content with a close-loss bonus point on the road. Next up for the Vikes they host Washington. Oregon hosts Oregon State.
