NJ HS 7s Kicks Off
Rugby New Jersey kicked off its fal HS 7s series this past weekend, with tournaments at Christian Brothers Academy on Sunday, September 11.
Two full-size grass fields and a bright, sunny day made for an excellent day of rugby.
Pat Moroney Rugby NJ 7’s Director was well prepared for the event. With the assistance of Henrique Ribeiro, a college intern from the Sports Management Department at Kutztown University the days games started promptly throughout the day. Six seasoned referees managed the games.
Midway through the day, the games were stopped to honor those who lost their lives on 9-11-2001. All the players, coaches and referee’s locked arms midfield for a moment of silence and the signing of the National Anthem.
“Although many of the players were young and may not remember the events of that day, it is important for them to pay honor and respect to those who were lost”, said Moroney. “One of our CBA lads lost his father on 9/11 when he was only an infant so we felt it was very important to pay respect and support him as well as honoring all those lost.”
As far as the games went - for the boys, Play Rugby was at the top of the heap, putting two teams into the Boys U19 bracket and sending both teams to the final, where Play Rugby 1 took 1st.
Christian Brothers also entered two teams and the White team took 3rd, while the Blue team finished 8th. St. Augustine took 4th.
In the Boys Christian Brothers White defeated St. Augustine.
In the Girls U19 bracket, Morris 1 took 1st over Morris 2, and Play Rugby 1 and 2 took 3rd and 4th, respectively.
