Men D1A Rankings Week 26
Men D1A Rankings Week 26
Well we might as well post the new D1A rankings now.
The seeds are going to be decided soon so at least here's our shot.
We could have moved Cal up a spot but we decided not to. Lindenwood's 28-24 loss to Life, comparable as it was to the Saint Mary's result against the Running Eagles, just has us thinking we'll leave it as-is. But we could easily have put Cal at #3. Cal Poly vaults up to #7 thanks to two astonishing wins this week.
You beat #9 and #6 in the space of four days it says something about you.
For the most part the rankings probably look as you'd expect them to. We do have some rankings to explain. Army moves up basically because the teams they lost close games to, Cal and Cal Poly, won games right afterward. Is Army better than UCLA? Maybe, maybe not. That's another ranking that could be flipped. But we did feel, overall, after carefully looking at it, to move Army ahead of Mount St. Mary's. It's tough, because we made the opposite decision last week. The difference might well be results against very high-ranked teams.
Both lost to Navy by similar scores.
MSM was close to Life and Army didn't play them.
MSM beat Arizona, and so did Army (although the result was closer, this was a much more seasoned Arizona team).
MSM lost 45-24 to Lindenwood, and Army lost to Cal 24-19, and Cal Poly 39-31—both winnable games by the way.
Very close, but Army is probably a little bit better here. And their overall record is a bit better. So Army moves up past MSM. That's a big move. If that move is reflected in the seedings, it means a home game for Army and a road game (at Army) for MSM.
The other thing we did was bump Penn State and, by extension, UMW, down a bit. Big loss for Penn State against a very good Life team, but with Arkansas State being moderately better, we decided to make that shift.
So ... if you follow the rankings, you'd have playoff matchups looking like this:
East:
Penn State at Life
Arkansas State at Navy
Davenport at Lindenwood
MSM at Army
West:
Colorado State at Cal
BYU at Saint Mary's
Arizona at Central Washington
UCLA at Cal Poly
But you never know how it will pan out. A UCLA vs Cal Poly rematch would be pretty cool, actually.
