Maryland Exiles and Good Counsel Kick Off 7s Series
The Maryland Exiles and Our Lady of Good Counsel High School got together this past weekend to start their sevens series.
"The focus is get everyone in and let them learn the game through Sevens," said Good Counsel Head Coach Karl Heineman.
Maryland Exiles Coach Dan Soso said the partnership is kind of a no-brainer.
"Our programs are literally just down the road from each other by about a mile, so it makes sense that we should work together and collaborate on developing rugby in our community," Soso said.
While the defense from both teams needs work, the offense was on display for everyone to see. Tries were scored in bunches for the Maryland Exiles by Daniel Boger, AJ Conway, Dylan Davies, Hodari Davis, Aniju Keyes, Jeremiah Owens, Marchie McDowell, and Cam Webster.
Good Counsel found the tryzone for multiple times as well with Brady Campbell, Greg Gibson, Max Heineman, Brendan Martin and Mark Sullivan finding paydirt for the Falcons.
Marchie McDowell was the MVP of the day for MDX. The senior, who will be attending Alderson-Broaddus on a full scholarship in the fall demonstrated outstanding creative skills, as well as great defense.
Brady Campbell was the MVP of the day for GC. His aggressive play and leadership provided a spark for the Falcons. Campbell will play rugby at Auburn in the fall.
Beltway Elite Sevens Assistant Coach Andre van der Merwe was impressed with the overall skill level on display: "The level of athleticism on display was impressive. Some of those young players are physically ready to play in the men's premier division. I am excited to see what is in store for their future."
The Maryland Exiles and Good Counsel will tee it up again this weekend to continue their series.
