High School Rugby in the middle of the country gets a much-needed jump-start after a rough winter with Lindenwood University hosting a pre-season tournament on their campus.

Fifteen boys HS teams are expected to play, with several bringing JV squads. There will be an eight-team Elite Division that includes several of the top HS teams in the nation: Penn, KC Jr. Blues, St. Thomas Aquinas (Kansas City), Brother Rice, Brownsburg, Kansas City Cougars, St. Louis University High, and Eureka HS.
Five of those teams ended last season ranked by Goff Rugby Report, and Penn is currently the single-school #2.
The Super 12 Division includes some JV teams from the Elite plus some up-and-comers (Mustangs Rugby and Christian Brothers, both out of St. Louis) as well as a brand-new program in St. James Academy out of the Kansas City area.
“It will be like Christmas morning,” said St. Thomas Aquinas Head Coach Tim Kluempers. “I am not sure if we will open up like a lump of coal or a nice new fire truck … more than likely somewhere in between. It will be a great test for our boys to see where we measure up against good competition.”
This will be the first-ever run-out for St. James, and the first run-out for Brother Rice as a single-school varsity team (they previously drew players from other schools and competed as a club).
For most of the teams involved, practice time outside has been a rare and precious thing, so this will be a test, but one with few ramifications.
Still, High School All American Head Coach Salty Thompson will be in attendance. He will not only scout players, but meet with the coaches to discuss what he is looking for at the next level.
Lindenwood is taking a soft approach to marketing their school while hosting the tournament. Teams will be playing on the school rugby field and in the football stadium, but Lindenwood Head Coach JD Stephenson said he will not be meeting with individual players, but instead meet with coaches and let team coaches be the liaison with their athletes.
All Super 12 teams will play two games on Saturday and two games on Sunday, with all games being 22-minute halves. The Elite Bracket will play two games on Saturday and one on Sunday.
