Key Win for GVSU in DII
Grand Valley State University won a key game in the Great Lakes Conference, taking down rivals Central Michigan 30-5.
Injuries have hit CMU a little bit but the side they fielded was a hard-nosed one that didn't back down.
In a somewhat mistake-riddled game made perhaps more mistake-laden because of the intensity of the contact, GVSU's backline was slowly able to take control as the contest wore on.
The Grand Valley backs showcased some good, accurate passing and the team's depth up front allowed them to create better opportunities for the runners. CMU flanker Tyler Waterstrat was very good and got his side going forward whenever he had the ball. At flyhalf Adam Russell was a menace over the ball and poached several possessions.
Freshman No. 8 Aiden Reilly for Grand Valley ran well and at one point executed a pick-and-go inside his own half and just kept going, scoring a try 55 meters later. With a good motor and a rangy running style, Reilly eats up ground and gets a lot of work done. He also likes the contact.
The entire GVSU back row enjoyed a good day and ensured GVSU got quick ball that was exploited by flyhalf Reinhardt Stipp, inside center Andrew Laskowski (who is also the captain), and outside center Troy Snyder.
But the Lakers made some errors in the red zone and certainly they will want to clean those up going forward. It wasn't creating chances, but finishing them, that is the work-on for the future for Grand Valley.
