IU Just Taking Care of Business
Perhaps the least surprising college 7s qualifier this past weekend was Indiana.
IU had been almost untouchable in the tournaments building up to the Big Ten Universities final, and weren’t really touched this past weekend, either.
For IU officer Bryce Campbell, it was business as usual.
“We did what we wanted to do,” he said. “We moved the ball wide. Wewanted to play faster than anyone else, and we did. Our defense was really good. Our structure was good.”
Facing Indiana in the final was a Wisconsin team full of talented players, but one that had been in 15s mode until the week before. In the heat, they tired, and that final game of ten-minute halves just sapped their strength.
“We got to them early,” said Campbell. “And we were strong on defense so as they tried to move the ball across they were really just going backward.”
In fact, asked to find a team that slowed Indiana down at all, Campbell picked Michigan, a team they beat 19-5.
Indiana is still considering going to the USA Rugby 7s championships, which they qualified for on Saturday, but they are certainly going to take the NBC exposure and go to the CRC invitational in Chester, Pa. The question is always about money, but whether they play one or two of those tournaments, they will do very well.
