Indiana Latest: Pendleton Overcomes Scare Hat Trick
Pendleton defeated Bishop Dwenger as Rugby Indiana action starts to heat up.
The varsity match was back-and-forth early on as both sides lacked recognizable continuity.
Still Pendleton did get on the scoreboard. Center Nick Trout took advantage of a penalty near the five-meter line, tapped, and was immediately tackled by an offside player. That led to a penalty try and a 7-0 Pendleton lead.
Bishop Dwenger immediately answered, scoring right off the restart with senior No. 8 Ashton Skarie going over. Skaire was a major standout for Dwenger and he scored twice more in the first half.
Pendleton's response was with the very active flanker Eli Arthur powering through tackles to score. And then as the half ended Trout punished a Dwenger mistake to go over.
That made it 19-15 Pendleton. The second half saw Pendleton's bench seal the deal. Finisher prop Kolbey Siler rumbled through for a try in the opening minute of the second period—much to the crowd's delight. And while Dwenger shut down the Arabians for a while—barely containing Pendleton fullback Clifton VanDuyn, who reeled off several long runs. James Malone was also dangerous with the ball in hand.
Finally runs by Sidiki Traore and by Man of the Match Sam Mossoney set up the final score as Trout found a gap and finished the drive.
Pendleton's JVs won 36-10 thanks to JJ Kissick's two tries.
Also in Indiana, Mudsock beat Royal Irish 22-21 in a midweek game behind two tries from Jack Seyferth. Penn showed they are starting to get their newer players clicking with the more exerienced group, beating Carmel 15-0. Wallace Kennach scored two tries for Penn and Vincent Horner added one.
