Hurricanes Storming Through Deep South
Watch out for the Bayou Hurricanes.
The Louisiana HS club continued winning big this weekend with an impressive 51-5 defeat of Niceville in the Deep South HS Conference. that victory put the Hurricanes at 3-0 in the Deep South. They were led by Demery Reener, who scored four tries, and Hunter Breit, who scored two. Xavier Triplett, Reese Guidry, and James Williams all touched down once, while Breit added three conversions on a windy day.
Niceville did not travel as strong as they like to, played hard until the end and were rewarded with a try late.
On Sunday, the Hurricanes faced Christian Brothers out of Memphis, Tenn., with a game of B-siders in one period and A-siders in the second. Bayou won convincingly.
“We are playing better this year,” said Bayou Coach Conrad Breit. “The players who are back from last year have a better understanding of the game, and they are helping the new kids learn.”
Breit said that the biggest adjustment for the players has been to get rid of old football habits - especially the backchat and trash talking.
“We had a lot of jaw-jacking last year and this year we’ve had no issue,” said Breit. “Maybe it’s an ego thing, but they took to the idea of playing as a team and it’s working.”
Based in Raceland, La., a town of sugar cane farmers and oil workers, Bayou has an improving set of forwards who are providing enough possession for a very dangerous backline to run in the tries.
“If we can get it past inside center, we can run on you,” he said.
The team’s defense, said Breit, is much improved. He has worked hard to get the players to advance their defense line as a unit, and the result has been 20 points allowed in three league games.
So now we’re all set up for the clash of the season in the Deep South, as next week the 3-0 Hurricanes face defending conference champs St. Paul’s in Raceland on Saturday.
“It’s going to be a big one, that’s for sure,” said Breit. “It promises to be a heck of a game.”
