HS Boys School Top 50 2025: Week 3

Cathedral Catholic is the highest-ranked active team right now. Photo John Fraser.

This early in the season it seems a bit unfair to drop teams that haven't even really started, but we have to.

We've dropped out three teams not because they did anything wrong, but because we have to make changes. Among those changes is another thing that happens every year—we team changes status. The last few years we've seen some single-school teams move to club status as they accept more and more players from outside their school. But Neuqua in Illinois has gone the other way. True, they haven't played a game yet and fans of Archbishop Moeller, for example, might feel hard-done-by, but remember, it's early days, and any team can play its way up or down.

Two teams that have played their way in are Faith Family Academy in Texas and Orange Lutheran. FFA won a game, and then lost competitively to a very good Strake Jesuit team. We can't guarantee they will stay in the Top 50, but they're there now. Orange Lutheran comes in after a good opening win in their league, but that's going to be a tough league to track because it's only four teams.

Can we get the SCIRF and SoCal Single-School together? Well we know there are obstacles, but, still, Torrey Pines, Orange Lutheran, Loyola LA, St. John Bosco, Cathedral Catholic, LCC, Fallbrook, St. Augustine Saints, Mira Costa, and Los Alamitos would potentially be the best all-school-league in the nation. Then you add in Jesuit, St. Francis, St. Ignatius, De La Salle, Bishop O'Dowd, San Joaquin Memorial, Serra, and Bellarmine in Northern California, and that's 18 really good to extremely good teams in the state playing in their school colors. And that's not mentioning the teams in SoCal that are very close to being one-school teams.

Charlotte Catholic wins a big game and moves up, but North Carolina has playoffs coming, so who knows? Cathedral Catholic looks very strong after a nicely-taken win over LCC. They will be playing Torrey Pines next, which is a good crossover of the type we mentioned above. That's tell us a lot
