HS All Americans Settle In As World School 7s Loom

The Boys HS All Americans are set up for the World School 7s this coming weekend.

Late injuries have reduced the squad, as the HSAA group in New Zealand without Nate Roeback and Levi Summerlin. There wasn't enough time to get anyone else to fill in, so the squad of 14 is now 12, which isn't so small.

The players stayed up late on the plane and tried hard to bust through the jet lag. Being close to the water and a little food and a little rugby practice helped get them on Kiwi time, and they needed to do that as on Tuesday they scrimmaged with the New Zealand Maori.

They lost four tries to two, but that was a fairly solid start in a tournament that is going to be a massive challenge.

In the early trainings and sessions, said Lucas LaCamp, the key thing is "getting to know each other and how the other boys play ... and just getting the calls down as well and getting that chat up and see how we all play and build up that chemistry."

LaCamp said everyone has thrown himself into the task, how eager they are to learn, and their tenacity.

"In that last game against the Maori All Blacks, even when we were losing the guys never gave up."

Head Coach JD Stephenson echoed that, but with a coach's caveat.

"I am overall pleased with the heart and commitment, but there were too many individual lapses that hurt us both sides of the ball," said Stephenson. And against quality international sides, that results in tries."

Still, two tries against the Maori is something to build on.
