How Would He Have Done?
Carlin Isles opted not to participate in this weekend's USA Track & Field Olympic trials, and so passed up a shot at being an Olympian in two sports.
Isles is in the middle of a grueling USA 7s team camp, and so taking time away for the track trials would certainly be something that might hurt his chances of making the rugby team. However, he had qualified to make the trials - twice running a personal best of 10.15 on June 18 to get into the field.
So, how would have had done had he repeated those times at the trials in Eugene, Ore.? Had he run a 10.15 in the opening heat, he would have qualified for the semifinals as the 21st out of 21 qualifiers - bumping Jarrion Lawson.
In the semis, a 10.15 would have put him at 18th, just ahead of Beejay Lee. In the semis, five racers clocked under 10 seconds, and in the final, three beat 10-flat. Had Isles made the final, he would have finished 8th out of 8 (his time was better than actual 8th-best Dentarius Locke). Justin Gatlin won the trial with a 9.80.
