Great Midwest Latest as We're Down to 4 in D2
GRR was proven quite wrong Saturday as the University of Chicago defeated Marquette 40-31 in the Great Midwest quarterfinals.
As GRR Editor Alex Goff stated this week: Marquette was expected to win.
With tries from flyhalf Will Johnson, center Caius Michlitsch, wing Jaime Fernandez, loose forward Jack Allison, lock Ashton Cheung, and No. 8 Nicholas Dokoozlian, and five conversions from scrumhalf and captain Pedro Casquinha, Chicago booked a place into the GMW semifinals. Chicago ran out to a 33-7 lead at halftime but they remembered from earlier in the season taking a 25-7 lead over Loyola only to surrender three tries and lose by a point.
"In the first half we came out swinging," said Casquinha, whose team was only able to field 17 thanks to injuries. "It was a complete team effort and everyone who showed up today played their best game of the season. We knew we could win this game but the benefit of playing those close games this season was ... we were up 25-7 against Loyola and we were angry that we threw that away. We knew we had to keep putting up points. Those losses was super helpful."
At No. 8, vice captain Dokosszlian was a monster all day. He was player of the game and his powerful carries continued to get Chicago go-forward.
"Every time he ran through the line it was three guys bringing him down," said Casquinha. "He's an all-around beast."
Northern Iowa won comfortably over Benedictine, which was expected, while Loyola beat Illinois State 45-29.
Northwestern had to work for it over Wisconsin Whitewater, taking the game 37-29.
Daniel Solomon and Dean Utata both scored two tries for the Wildcats. Sam Biggs added a try and Ethan Hawes converted converted three and added two penalty goals.
So what that sets up is the semifinals, with Northwestern playing UNI and Loyola playing Chicago next week.
The last time Loyola and Chicago played, Loyola came away winners 26-25, but, as we noted above, Chicago had a 25-7 lead.
