Girls All-Star Teams in Action This Weekend

The list of girls all-star teams slated to play in this coming weekend's Regional Cup all-star tournaments.

The Northeast tournament is being held in Albany, NY; the South in Matthews, NC, and the Rocky Mountain Challenge in Aurora, Colo. The concern that an school-grade limit for JV teams - only 9th- and 10th-graders can play on the JV teams - would limit the number of JV teams has come to fruition, and in fact some involved with the all-star teams say it has limited the ability of varsity teams to field full squads (as younger-grade players are not allowed to play up).

So only nine JV girls teams are in action, with a shockingly low two in the massive RMC in Colorado. In the Varsity bracket, 15 teams are involved. However, it seems clear that the age rules have hit some regions hard - instead of JV teams from Massachusetts, New York, and New Jersey, for example, there's only a Northeast Combined team. In the Varsity bracket, the New York Capital Area, Vermont, and Maryland have combined for a team.
