Georgetown Makes Statement in Shutout Victory
Georgetown is now 5-0 in Mid-Atlantic play and it's looking like they are on a collision course with Villanova in Men's D2 action.
While Villanova got a forfeit (not something anyone wants) Georgetown took on the second-place team in the MARC Potomac Division in Towson University, perhaps their closest rivals in the division. The result was a somewhat astonishing 44-0 shutout. In their five games, Georgetown has allowed just 27 points.
Man of the Match was No. 8 Braeden Mahoney, who led the side with his defensive work. Mahoney made gains on the ground as well, but really overall the Georgetown attack was working nicely so it was the defense, where Georgetown blanked Towson, where Mahoney set the tone.
Lock Nick Frayter continued to play well and he also was a defensive stone in Georgetown's wall.
On both sides of the ball out in the backline, inside center Andrew Maloney was outstanding.
"Tactically and defensively the team was very sound," said captain Mark Kearney. "Our set pieces have been great this year and are continuing to look good and our backline remains solid and is developing a lot of depth for the upcoming playoffs."
The upcoming playoffs. Oh yes. Georgetown did well in the national playoffs last season, beating a good Marist team in the Round of 16 before falling 30-19 to Norwich. They have perhaps even bigger dreams this time around.
But to do that they likely have to get through Villanova to avoid a play-in game, and lurking also is Bucknell, who could still spoil plans.
So far, however, Georgetown seems to be fairly dominant.
