Genesis Hammers Kau Toa in Utah
Last week Genesis (ranked #47 among HS clubs by Goff Rugby Report) was able to get a win in the Utah Youth Rugby Multi-School season opener despite an abundance of sloppy play and mistakes.
And while there were still too many mistakes in Week 2 for Coach Tuli Vaitohi's tastes, it was clear that Genesis had made some great strides in their form from the previous week by beating a game Kau Toa squad (ranked #48) 70-0.
After backing up Kau Toa to their own 5-meter line due to a well-placed kickoff, Genesis was able to steal a lineout and junior inside center Brook Vaitohi touched it down from just a few meters out. Moments later Genesis took the restart kick from Kau Toa and matriculated the ball down the field mostly using their forward pack. This momentum continued until junior outside center Dallin Winter finally touched down under the posts. Both tries were converted and Genesis led 14-0 and never looked back.
Although Kau Toa’s forward pack challenged Genesis’ defensive line a number of times, stole several balls in the rucks, Genesis was able to absorb that pressure and put Kau Toa on the back foot again. By the second half almost all of the ball and territory belonged to Genesis, and Kau Toa was tired from having to defend so much.
Additional try scorers for Genesis included Zack Mower, Niua Tuita, Kingi Langi, Chase Prather, Payton Kelepolo, Tai Palapeoi, Nate Leckie, Timothy Barton, and Tai Kauwe.
“These boys know that I am rarely satisfied," said Vaitohi. "Although I am proud of their effort and I am glad that we got the win, we still have a lot to work on if we want to beat the best teams in the state.”
Genesis will face their stiffest test of the season next week when they host East High Rugby (SS #29). “East is a huge team with tremendous talent throughout. Our boys are really looking forward to playing them due to a major rivalry that spans both rugby and football. We can’t wait to host them for what should be a ferociously-contested match,” said Vaitohi.
