For Fall Rugby For University at Buffalo
The University at Buffalo men's rugby team is not going to be playing rugby this fall.
The program announced today that it will suspend the season due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
Here is the full announcement:
Following the postponement of Fall sports by University at Buffalo Athletics and the MAC Conference, UB Men’s Rugby has suspended plans for any fall competition.
“The safety and welfare of our student-athletes is our number one priority and responsibility,’’ said Head Coach Mike Hodgins. ‘’We realize this is disappointing to all of our athletes, parents, and alumni but this is the most prudent thing to do. Given the current climate of uncertainty on our campuses and in the broader rugby community regarding return to play and how it relates to public health this is an easy decision. We will continue to undertake appropriate, allowed activities and training, and hope to be back in full operation by spring semester 2021. I would like to thank all of our stakeholders for their continued support and patience given the current situation.’
The mention of the MAC Conference in this instance refers to the NCAA conference that most UB sports play in. UB men's rugby actually plays in the Liberty Conference, not the MAC. The Liberty Conference has not made any announcements. The MAC rugby conference is expected to announce shortly that it will not compete this fall. However, it has not done so as of this posting.
