Denver Wins NSCRO Open Qualifier
The University of Denver shut out Mira Costa College 21-0 in the final of the National Small College Rugby Organization (NSCRO) open 7s qualifier in Las Vegas last weekend.
The tournament itself was quite competitive and a hgh percentage of the games were very close. Neither Denver nor Mira Costa won their pool.
Denver opened up the weekend of action with a 29-24 defeat of Mira Costa but then lost 22-14 to Cal Maritime. the Cal Maritime Keelhaulers went on to defeat Mira Costa 27-12 to go 2-0 in their pool.
In the other pool, Occidental went 2-0, beating Wheeling University 17-14 and Pacific 33-0. Wheeling finished 1-1 after beating Pacific 40-0.
So that meant Cal Maritime and Occidental got a bye to the semifinals. Denver shut out Pacific 33-0 in the quarterfinals, while Mira Costa held off Wheeling 27-19. In the semis, Denver edged Cal Maritime 21-17. Both teams scored three tries, but Denver converted all three to win it.
Mira Costa defeated Occidental 28-7 to make the final.
Denver was on a roll at that point, and didn't give Mira Costa much in the way of scoring opportunities.
