D1A Weekend: Cats at Bears and More

Cal vs Saint Mary's from 2024. David Barpal photo.

We talked a little with our video about lopsided scores, and yes the gap between the very strongest teams on the West Coast and the rest is a concern.

We have also talked about how Arizona looked impressive in a close loss to Saint Mary's two weeks ago. The Wildcats visit Cal this week and will have their work cut out for them. After that 12-10 loss to the Gaels, Arizona Head Coach Sean Duffy said his team wasn't satisfied with moral victories.

"We felt we did what it took to win but the bounce of the ball didn't go our way. The lesson for us is finishing the 80 minutes and the importance of a great defensive foundation to handle these strong attacking sides," Duffy said. Wise words.

We're watching Sac State vs UCSC. That's actually a game with some significant rankings implications.

We have two games with D1A teams in the Lonestar (Texas and Texas A&M) playing D1AA opposition, which is what they have been doing all season. If A&M shows well vs Texas State we might put them in our Top 25.

And one final note: Remember (and we talk about it here) that D1A is unleashing a Challenge Cup playoff, and that's a playoff for teams that don't make the Round of 16 but still want to wrap up the season with a nice postseason bow. One team playing this weekend that might have an interest in that is Utah State, which visits Utah.
