Colorado Defeats Grand Canyon

CU players celebrate a key moment.

Grand Canyon University kicked off their season with a two-game tour of Colorado.

The 'Lopes opened the trip Friday night with a matchup against Colorado University, and Sunday against Colorado State.

The opener was GCU's first runout and it looked it. They were hit with mistakes and committed a ton of penalties.

The penalties really hurt as Colorado took 15 points from five penalty goals to win it 25-15.

Flyhalf Marc Oriol was the goalkicker and also managed the game impressively for the Buffs. He also defended well. Captain and flanker Liam Malloy led by example, while the scrums were pretty successful for Colorado thanks in part to prop Ben Blade.

Overall the set piece works for Colorado, which meant that the handling errors and penalties from Grand Canyon were punished fairly severely.

With CU hooker Jack Chisholm on-target with his lineout throws and defending smartly, Colorado pulled out the win.

"We have a young team that plays with heart and desire," said CU Head Coach Chris Handson. "Four of our starters were freshmen and we have a couple of sophomores in the starting lineup so we have a fantastic core group—lots of good stuff coming from CU over the next several years."
