Clutch Try Sees Boca Past Gibbons

Boca in red vs Gibbons on Saturday.

The Boca Raton Buccaneers opened their high school club rugby season with a triumph against the Cardinal Gibbons team on a sunny Feb. 3 afternoon at Cardinal Gibbons High School.

In a closely-contested game that saw the Buccaneers ultimately prevail, Boca Raton secured a 22-17 victory over Cardinal Gibbons.

The game's key moment came when the teams were tied 17-17; Luke Ballinger went over for the fourth Boca Raton try that sealed the victory, which could have gone either way.

Felipe Elizathe, captaining the Boca Raton team, was praised for his leadership, while Damian Jones showed his aerial prowess in the lineouts, disrupting Gibbons possession in that set piece. New Boca players Maddox Haase and Trent Gamble caught the eye with their physical presence in the defense.

"It was a game that could have gone either way," said Boca Raton Head Coach Chris Vassel. "Overall the team played well as a group and we are building."

Following this win, the Buccaneers are now set to square off against the Jacksonville Wolverines on Feb. 10, at Don Estridge Middle School in Palm Beach, Florida. The victory over Cardinal Gibbons moved Boca Raton to a 1-0, while Gibbons is 0-1. Jacksonville lost 26-0 to Okapi over the weekend.
