Citadel Defeats Ohio
The Citadel opened up the spring half of the rugby year by hosting DIAA Ohio University on a warm and sunny pitch on the Citadel Campus.
Senior Captian Alex McDonald led the Bulldogs in the last 15s match of the season, opening the scoring on a 50-meter break, scoring again off a loose ball from a ruck midway in the first half, and then again in the second half from 15 meters out.
MacDonald also chewed up a lot of real estate in both halves keeping the Bulldogs in posession for a majority of the match. Freshman wing, Elison Rourke and sophomore No. 8 Sam VonCannon both scored their first varsity tries. Junior wing Ricky Tavarez and junior lock Austin Bannister were dangerous with the ball in hand, and junior No. 8 was aggressive over the ball, netting four poaches on the day.
The Citadel defense was nearly impenetrable even though a very good Ohio Universty squad found ways to create seams with good passing and a talented backline. Ohio scored first one a penalty kick in the first half and scored a try 13 minutes into the match, but failed to connect on the conversion. In the second half the Bulldogs shook off the holiday break rust and shut out Ohio the remainder of the game.
