Cima in Leicester for Academy Trial
Cima in Leicester for Academy Trial
Former High School All American and ongoing USA U20 flyhalf Ben Cima is on a one-week trial at the Leicester Tigers in England for their academy team.
Cima, who led Gonzaga HS to a National Invitational Tournament championship in the single-school division, just completed his freshman fall season at the University of Maryland. His trip to England caps off a whirlwind year for the flyhalf. He tried out for, and played for, the USA U20s (aka Junior All Americans), where he needed a waiver to be allowed to play in the Junior World Rugby Trophy, because he was younger than the minimum age. He helped the USA finish 3rd, and then returned to Gonzaga to lead them to a championship, earning GRR's HS Player of the Year award..
After that was the HS All American tour, and in the fall he was called up to try out for the USA Selects team for the Americas Rugby Championship. He also got to suit up for Maryland alongside his older brother, Matias. So now, after being part of so many teams in the USA, he's in England with another jersey on.
"It's going really well," Cima told Goff Rugby Report. He is there for a week trial, and really it's a chance for Cima to be seen by a pro team.
Cima joins Blaine Scully and Greg Peterson in Leicester (additional - those two have signed with the full pro team, while Cima is trying to make the academy - AG). He also joins another USA U20 player in England as Hanco Germishuys has been tearing it up for the Gloucester Academy.
