Cedar Falls Alone Atop Iowa Girls Sevens League

Cedar Falls is now the only undefeated team in the girls Iowa HS 7s league after Monday's action.

Going into the day's competition both Cedar Falls and Southeast Polk were 6-0 but they faced off on Monday with Cedar Falls putting in an impressive showing, winning 35-5.

In that game co-captain Mattie Dieken logged 15 points with five conversions and a try, while Macie Graves touched down twice.

Also on the day Cedar Falls beat Cedar Rapids 66-0 to cap off a 2-0 day. Dieken once again logged 15 points, while Emma Jacobs scored three tries and she added spark on defense. Laney Wasekuk scored 11 points and also touched down in the game against SE Polk.

"The ladies are off to a great start," said Cedar Falls Head Coach Brent Piper. "SE Polk is always a well coached and tough team. One of our strengths is our depth. We have sophomores Laney Waseskuk and Birklie Waskow that came off the bench and played very well."

Dieken continues to score points and in fact knocked over her 100th conversion on Monday. But she brings more than that.

"Mattie is a workhorse at center," said Piper. "She creates lots of opportunities in our offensive attack for Macie Graves at wing."

Also in the Iowa league, Waverly Shell Rock kept pace with SE Polk at 7-1 with a 52-0 win over West Des Moines. Lilly Stough scored 22 for WSR and Mya Behrends scored two tries. We won't see Waverly Shell Rock vs SE Polk on October 21.

Right now there is a pretty clear division between the upper part of the ladder and the lower part.

Those top three—Cedar Falls, Waverly Shell Rock, and SE Polk—when they play anyone else other than each other, have an average winning margin of 38. At 4th, with a 6-2 record, is Central Springs. They lost games to Cedar Falls (31-0) and SE Polk (27-14). In their other games their average winning margin is 33. The rest of the 13-team league has an average points-difference of -16.

So it seems like there's a big competition among the top four, and some work to do for others to chase them down.
