Boys School HS Rugby Rankings Week 3

NOLA Jesuit moves up.

As we warned you, things can move quite dramatically this early in the season.

This is especially true if we've got a ranking based in part on historical data. But it's also true when we've got a ranking based on just one or two results. Those results can be undercut by just one loss.

In this week's rankings we have the case of one newly-highly-ranked team losing a game, and another winning a game. In addition, a little more info regarding some off-season stuff out of our control forces another shift.

St. Augustine lost this past week, and so drops down from #3 to a more manageable #16. Since St. Augustine plays Cathedral a couple of times this season—the same with Fallbrook—we can see if some of those early results hold up. A major concern with the SCIRF is playing outside the league. How can we judge their overall strength unless they play someone else? This is why the early clashes with Jesuit of Sacramento were so important.

New Orleans Jesuit had moved up 37 spots last week and after another impressive win, this time over Brother Martin. So the Blue Jays move up. (Again, fans of NOLA Jesuit, remember that many of the teams have not played yet, and could overtake them in the rankings). Torrey Pines also moves up because they beat Carlsbad. Now, Carlsbad is not ranked in the school rankings because they play in SoCal's Open Division. This division, by definition, does not have players only from one school (or even from one school district ... some schools allow athletes from other schools to play varsity sports if a sport is not offered at the athlete's own school; the SoCal Open Division has a broader draw than that). But we aren't judging Carlsbad as a club, either, because this group will likely play as the Thunder once the club season starts.

So the Open Division teams in SoCal are in something of a limbo, but the players that move on into the club season will see their clubs eligible for ranking. But, having said that, this was a very good result for Torrey Pines and they are bumped up six spots.

Moving up even more is Cardinal Gibbons, which took down a solid Hammerheads club by a large margin in Florida and so jumps 21 points to #12. Again, a warning: Moeller, Penn, Xavier, Sacramento Jesuit, or any number of other teams could start strong when they get on the field and overtake Gibbons even if Gibbons remains on form.

In Texas, Strake Jesuit moves up after an opening win, and same with Westlake. The North Carolina teams nudge upward, while Fallbrook drops down after winning, but 17-15 in a game we'd expect them to win by more.

And finally, Rocky Mountain and Owyhee. This is a change based on some school redistricting. Many players and coaches who were with Rocky Mountain got redistricted into the new Owyhee High School. So we are re-ranking these two teams based on that. Still it's a guess—Rocky Mountain could recruit like crazy, or Owyhee could struggle with chemistry and in fact it's Capital that rises to the top in Idaho. We'll see.
