Both HS #1-Ranked Teams Defeated On Same Day

Germantown, in gray, held on for an impressive victory. Tom Sweeney Photography.

In a wild weekend of high school rugby action, both #1-ranked high school teams lost.

The top-ranked HS club, Woodlands, lost in a tight one on tour in Tennessee, with #21 Germantown defeating the Texas-based team 27-24. This was not a massive upset, as Germantown has logged some good results of late, and Woodlands' place as #1 was vulnerable as more top clubs get on the field.

Regardless, Germantown did very well to win this, and in fact led 27-5 early in the second half.

Meanwhile, St. Ignatius (ranked #10 as a single-school) defeated Gonzaga HS 24-15.

"We have a series of five really tough games to start the season and if we're 3-2 that will be pretty good," warned Gonzaga Head Coach Peter Baggetta, who added that he was not afraid of his team losing games to learn something.

This is a young Ignatius team but seniors  Chris Mathews, Thomas Maloney, and Brian Strauss were all critical to this effort.
