Arizona State Hires New Coach, Manager, Returns To Field
Arizona State University Men's Rugby has reached an agreement with ASU and with D1A and the Varsity Cup that will being the team back on the field but will also bring in a new head coach.
ASU will not participate in any postseason for the 2017-18 season, and will take on a new coach. All of this follows an incident during this past springs Arizona State-v-Arizona meeting, when, during a B-side game, a non-student suited up for ASU and then attacked an Arizona player, hurting him badly.
This incident led to the arrest of the offending player, and the suspension of the ASU team, which had to drop out of the Varsity Cup.
Now ASU will return to the field, but with no post-season for this year. And Pieter Hugo has replaced Gary Lane as Head Coach. Hugo will start with ASU immediately and has much work ahead of him to rebuild the program. From South Africa, Huge started playing rugby at the age of eight. He played for the regional teams at primary and high school level, and studied Computer Science at Pretoria Technikon, where he represented the school at U20 and senior level. Huge then went on to play for Yskor-Technikon a Division I team in Pretoria (1993-1994) and then moved to the Johannesburg area to play in the Premier Division for Pirates (1995) and Roodepoort (1996-1998). He then moved to the USA, playing for the Arizona Select Side from 1999-2006, captaining the side from 2002-2005. He was also a Pacific Coast Grizzly all-star player and captained the Phoenix club's 7s team at the 2001 Men's National Club Championship in Philadelphia
He is a Level 300 Coach and a World Rugby Coaching Educator. He coached the Rugby Arizona High School All Star 15s team last year and this year, and also the Arizona men's all-star program.
The ASU Rugby program has also hired Kylie Carlson (nee Wheeler) to be the club manager. Carlson is a current board member of ASU Rugby and has been with the team as an athletic trainer for four years.
