All-Time American List: Colby Slater
All-Time American List: Colby Slater
Colby "Babe" Slater is a two-time Olympic winner and a mountain of a man at a time when few athletes were as big or physical.
Rugby was played in high school in California in the early part of the 20th Century and Slater played at Berkeley HS and then the University Farm School (later UC Davis). He served in the US Army during World War I, and became a farmer who still put on the boots. Enough that he suited up for the USA in the 1920 and 1924 Olympics, both gold medal victories for the United States.
A powerful and imposing lock forward—look at how he towers over everyone in the photo—Slater captained the USA in the gold medal game against France in 1924.
