All Mason-Dixon Eyes on UNC v Virginia
Some questions, at least, will be answered in the Mason-Dixon Women's Collegiate Conference this weekend as undefeated North Carolina takes on undefeated Virginia.
The winner of that game will be the Mason-Dixon South #1, and that will bring with it a much, much easier road to the national playoffs. The Mason-Dixon South leader will play either Pitt or Virginia Tech April 2. But which team, they won't know until that day, as Pitt and Va Tech will have a challenge match earlier in the day to decide who gets to enter the conference semis. It's likely they will be tired by the time the semis roll around.
The South #2, on the other hand, will have to face a very strong James Madison squad, the North #1.
So much is on the line this weekend between UVa and UNC.
"We are very similar teams and we're similar universities," said UNC Coach Johnathan Atkeison. "They are always tough and Virginia is a team we've battled with for years."
UNC recently got some good news with No. 8 Katie Lutton being nominated for the Sorensen Award. But they're going to need everyone to beat the Cavaliers.
"We have to stop their backline attack," said Atkeison. "We have to find a way to slow them down."
Virginia is coming off a 79-0 defeat of Temple. Three of the top four Mason-Dixon teams are slated to enter the USA Rugby Women's DI quarterfinals, with the Florida champion (expected to be Central Florida) the fourth team in the eastern half of the bracket.
