Unorthodox Fiji Dismantles USA
A disappointing end for the USA Women at the Dubai 7s, as the Eagles dropped its Plate semifinal 24-21 to Fiji. The Americans played catch-up the entire match and could subdue the Fijians' unconventional, erratic style.
Fiji did everything it could to keep the ball alive - from retreating, to heaving the ball football-style, to employing its famous footwork - and then accelerated through the gaps with good speed. The USA couldn't cope with the loose yet persistant style, and also had trouble matching Fiji's strength in the breakdowns and in close.
With the half almost expired, Fiji led the USA 19-0, as Asinate Savu, Rusila Nagasau and Esiteri Bulikiobo dotted down, and Savu knocked over two conversions. But Eagle captain Kelly Griffin quick-tapped through a penalty and tore away from the USA's first score, which Amelia Villines converted, to give the Americans a little lift into the break, 19-7.
About a minute into the second half, Jessica Javelet finished off some quick hands with some feet, and pulled away easily for another try, which Villines converted for the 19-14 scoreline. There was plenty of game left, and it looked like a comeback was very possible.
But then a crucial mistake saw that enthusiasm dissipate, as Katie Johnson chose contact over evasion, and once she hit the ground, Fiji retook possession with a powerful breakdown push. The ball moved to Savu, who touched down her second try and third conversion of the day, 24-21.
A minute later, Hannah Lopez breached the defensive line in Fiji's end and outran her pursuers. She converted the score with 30 seconds left, and when Fiji coughed up the ball soon after the restart, everyone's eyes bulged. But just as the game started to favor the USA, a not-releasing penalty allowed Fiji to kick to touch and end the game.
