APEX At Summit of Girls Serevi Cup
The APEX Girls compilation team needed everything they had to upend a determined Oregon Redhawks team to win the Girls bracket of the Serevi Cup Saturday in Tukwila, Wash.
Mata Hingano scored the only try in the final to see APEX through 5-0.
Through the day both teams had matched each other blow for blow. APEX beat the Washington Loggers II team 34-0, Oregon won 39-0. APEX beat the Minnesota Tundra II team 22-10, Oregon won 27-5. Oregon edged Loggers I 24-21, APEX beat them 26-7. Oregon shut out the Tundra I team 26-0, APEX beat them 41-0.
Through the day Oregon looked the better team, having played together a little bit more. They were helped by exciting young and new player Anna Aguon, who was speedy and opportunistic, Kayla Postula, and McKenna Davis, and a host of fast players.
"The thing that helped us today was supporting each other on and off the field," said Davis.
"The offload out of contact is really important to us and it's what we worked on today," added Postula.
Many Oregon tries came from a long break that was stopped close to the line, and ended with a pop pass to a trailing support runner. Too many teams failed to send that runner, but Oregon had them.
So did APEX. Made up of players from Northern and Southern California, Colorado, and elsewhere, this APEX team started playing together in a hurry.
"We had players propping who weren't used to propping," said Coach Karl Barth. "We had players who were used to be stars on their team learning to work more within the system and learning to depend more on their teammates. They started to do that and it was nice to see."
The final did not disappoint as both teams put it all on the field, and defended doggedly. APEX took the championship, and Ashlee Byrge, who was a danger on the outside all day, took the tournament MVP award.
The Tundra II team took the Plate.
