WMU, BGSU into MAC FInal
The Mid-America Conference final is set after Bowling Green cruised by Miami and Western Michigan pulled off a mild upset over Dayton.
Bowling Green won big over most of their competition this year and so beating Miami 53-13 was no big surprise. But Western Michigan, which lost to Dayton earlier in the season, raised some eyebrows with a 17-12 defeat of Dayton Saturday.
“We lost a close game to them in Dayton,” said WMU Head Coach Mark Allen. “We felt pretty confident this would be a close game, and we liked our chances.”
Allen praised the work of his pack, which won all of their set pieces and set a good platform for their backs.
“When we win our set pieces, we usually do well,” he said. “We also played pretty god defense, and while we had a few breakdowns, it was good enough. We will have to play a lot better defensively to beat Bowling Green tomorrow.”
So WMU takes on BGSU on Sunday at the Moose Rugby Grounds in Elkhart, Ind. The two teams met October 18, with Bowling Green winning 36-6. It was the fewest points the Falcons scored against any opponent, but it was also WMU’s worst result.
“We played them at their place and we were competitive,” said Allen. “On neutral ground I think we have the athletes to compete with them.”
