GRR: Gregory the Great
In an intriguing non-conference boys high school rugby matchup, the Vienna rugby team defeated the Gregory the Great Academy (GGA) with a final score of 21-14 Saturday.
Gregory the Great won their second state championship in the last three years, defeating Berks 27-10 in Sunday's Rugby Pennsylvania final.
GGA held a very potent Berks attack in check.
The weather played havoc with plenty of rugby this weekend, including the Rugby PA games.
Sunday's game between Berks and Conestoga didn't survive the rain. But the big clash between LaSalle and Gregory the Great did get played.
Both teams came into the matchup 3-0 and looking for the top seed in the playoffs.
Pennsylvania's league season opened up with a series of relatively lopsided results.
LaSalle impressed with a 43-10 win over Malvern Prep; Berks won big over West Shore 46-0; St. Joe's Prep won 43-5 over Doylestown.
The closest game was certainly Conestoga's 22-20 edging of defending state champs Gregory the Great.
Fort Hunt opened their account for the 2022 season with a well-taken 47-17 victory over Gregory the Great Academy.
While both of these teams are fairly prominent and are high in the GRR rankings, this was the first run-out for both, so a little rustiness was expected.
