View Park Escapes Scare
View Park Prep opened their Southern California Varsity Red league account with a very difficult 28-24 win over Roosevelt HS.
Hit with some last-minute absences in the pack, View Park had all sorts of trouble containing Roosevelt's pick-and-go offense. With their big pack Roosevelt ran out to a 17-0 lead. But View Park started to get a little more possession as the game rolled on, and tries from Emari Daniels and Zarion Patton made it 17-14 at the break.
Roosevelt scored once more, again using their bigger pack to powered through the View Park defense.
"We were massively outsize up front and that killed us," said View Park Head Coach David Hughes. "We just found it so hard to stop their repeated crashed."
But tey did enough, and in the final 15 minutes,Daniels scored on a long-range try to make it 24-21 Roosevelt. And then with two minutes left Malik Montez-Hendon went over for the game-winner.
After a couple of years of struggling with their goalkicking, View Park got a good day with the boot when they most needed it. Montez-Hendon converted all four tries, and that was the difference as View Park won 28-24.
This was the only league game this week in the LA Division of the SoCal Varsity Red (teams are 100% from one school and follow state-wide HS athletics rules). The San Diego Division had no league games, but Del Norte did beat Great Oak in a non-league game.
