Two Iona Wins Highlight Rugby East Warmups
Iona College put together two nice early victories in warmup games last week.
Iona had a fairly comfortable time of it against Fairfield, winning 48-0 in a fame where the Gaels ran in changes relatively early. Then Iona took on Fordham, which hung touch through the game and scored two late tries in a 36-20 Iona victory.
"Fordham will be very competitive in the Empire Conference," said Ioan Head Coach Bruce McLane. "Iona played pretty well and we were able to play a lot of guys. We are very young, but it was a good start for us."
Iona now looks ahead to a tough Rugby East opener against Army on September 9.
Also in Rugby East warmup games, Buffalo defeated Syracuse 38-0 in an early buildup game for both teams. Syracuse put together plenty of good attacking movements and spend large portions of the game inside the Buffalo 22. However, UB's defense was very good, especially for this early in the season, and they were patient. With the ball, Buffalo was fast and executed a couple of nice backline moves for tries.

Wheeling Jesuit played Notre Dame College and lost 59-5 (details).
Coming up this week among Rugby East teams, Penn State plays Queens University in Canada on Thursday, and Pitt back home on Saturday. Stony Brook is at Army on Friday, while Buffalo faces off with the Buffalo Men's Club also on Friday. St. Bonaventure is at Notre Dame College (also on Friday), and on Saturday Wheeling Jesuit visits Mount Saint Mary's and West Virginia hosts Bowling Green.
