St. Thomas traveled to Morristown, NJ last Thursday as part of the Texas-based team's Spring Break tour, and faced off with defending state champion Delbarton Prep.
It was expected to be a tough game, but Delbarton has graduated some players and struggled to keep up with a more game-tested St. Thomas team.
The match was scoreless the first 20 minutes when the Eagles broke rough for a 5-0 lead. Senior center wing Michael Blanchard and junior Griffin Maat - newly converted from flanker to center - scored tries to open up a 22-0 halftime advantage. Senior captain and No. 8 Joshua Pane led with effective running and on-field leadership as St. Thomas scored twice more to win 36-0.
"It was a tough match against a big, physical team," said St. Thomas Coach James Wolfinger, who added that St. Thomas was able to "break the line after extended pressure. But, as time wore on, St. Thomas pressure converted to points."
St. Thomas next hosts GRR-ranked St. Ignatius out of Cleveland, Ohio as the Ohio teams tours through the Lone Star State. Ignatius will face St. Thomas, Cy-Fair, Westlake, and Jesuit of Dallas in the space of five days.
