Power Start for University City
University City has started the Southern California Varsity White season with a pretty emphatic 2-0 league record, beating La Jolla 52-0 and Patric Henry 73-5.
The wins put UC in 1st alongside Mira Mesa in the San Diego South division - those two teams are slated to face off at the end of January.
For University Head Coach Jason Lee, the start could hardly be any better.
“We lost some significant seniors and some physically dominant players from last year,” Lee told Goff Rugby Report. “But we’ve got tons of skill.”
And so they have. With more than half of his team being made up of athletes who play rugby pretty much year-round, and with more recruits coming in, UC looks as strong as ever.
With more time working on various aspects of their game, the UC players come to this season a little more polished, and it has shown in the scores so far. Of course Patrick Madden continues to be one of the top payers in the region, and, said Lee, “a natural leader.”
But he’s not the only one playing well.
“We really don’t have a team that relies on two or three major standouts,” said Lee. “We’re getting more athletes into the program and it’s making everyone better.”
Still, watch out for prop Damen Kohli, Gabriel Raichert, and No. 8 Zach Rohde. All three have made an impact in the early going.
With the impressive start (minus any preseason games, by the way), the Honey Badgers will take on High Tech High on January 7, followed by Coronado and Westview. But all eyes have to be on the Mira Mesa clash in a month - that would decide who’s best in the division.
