The current USA Rugby DII women’s college champion, Mary Washington, has announced the availability of rugby scholarships.

The university itself is providing one-time $1,000 scholarships to 12 incoming players, who have demonstrated leadership and service involvement. The money will be applicable to the 2015-2016 academic year.  While the team recognizes that the money is not enough to significantly impact one’s tuition, it is an additional step the school is taking to show support for the UMW Women’s Rugby program.

This is NOT an athletic scholarship.  As a club sport, the leadership infrastructure is what sustains the team. Strong team leadership is the basis for a team’s structure that provides for player enjoyment and retention. This solid structure is what ultimately builds new rugby players and makes current players even better.

Therefore the Mary Washington Women’s Rugby team is looking to recruit players who will develop into future team leaders.  The team wants committed players who also possess the skill and initiative to fulfill the leadership roles on the team.
